# II- Shibarium: a pivotal moment for Shiba Inu.

<mark style="background-color:red;">Shibarium is a proposed Layer 2 blockchain that aims to become a scalable and low-cost solution for handling transactions in the Shiba Inu ecosystem, which includes the tokens SHIB, LEASH, and BONE.</mark> As of now, the costs and latency of the Ethereum network present significant challenges to these tokens, motivating the Shiba Inu team to work on their own blockchain.<br>

In crypto speak, a "Layer 2" is any protocol built on top of an existing blockchain ("Layer 1") with the aim to increase transaction speed and efficiency.

<mark style="background-color:red;">One main purpose of Shibarium is to introduce "Shi", a stablecoin pegged to one cent (0.01 USD), meant to simplify transactions by making the value easier to understand compared to smaller fractions common in other tokens.</mark> By creating Shibarium, they will be able to manage transaction costs better and take more control over their ecosystem.
